The School Day

Mornings
The school is open from 08.15 to 18.30, Monday to Thursday and from 08.15 – 17.30 on Friday. We can only take responsibility for children during those hours. In an emergency, children can be supervised before and after these hours by the Housemother.

Breakfast
Breakfast is offered to all children who are being dropped off early. This is to help cater for working families. An additional cost of £3.00 is charged for breakfast, children are offered cereals, toast and fruit juice. Breakfast can be booked via the School Office.

Morning Lessons
Lessons in the Upper School are 35 minutes in length. There are 6 lesson periods in the morning, during which the majority of the core subjects are taught. There is a half an hour break at 11.20. Lessons in the Pre-Prep run from 9am to 12noon, with a half an hour break at 10.30am.

Lunch
The Nursery children eat their lunches in their classroom. The Kindergarten children eat in The Brew House as one group. The children in Nursery and Kindergarten sit at tables and a member of staff will sit with them. They are offered the same food as everyone else and no packed lunches are allowed.

All other children use the school dining room to eat. There are 2 sittings – 12.00 and 13.00.

A balanced meal is offered every day and children are encouraged to eat their vegetables. As well as a hot meal, a vegetarian option and salad bar are also offered. The Chef is happy to cater for children with any dietary requirements. Children are encouraged to keep hydrated throughout the day and water is served to the children at all breaks and lunchtime as well as being freely available throughout the day. All children (except Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception) are asked to rning a full, named water bottle to school everyday. Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception have their own cups with names on in their class and are encouraged to drink throughout the day.

Lunchtime Activities
There are many options for the children at Oakwood during the lunchtime break. As well as playing in the wonderful grounds, they can also choose to attend fencing, karate, chess, logo, choir, ballet and art, or simply to read quietly in the spacious and inviting library. Please see the section on the website for further details.

Snacks
All children are offered a drink and a snack during morning break and again before clubs begin after school. We ask that children do not bring in any other snacks due to allergies that some children may have, however for special occasions please consult your child's Form Teacher.

Afternoons
There are 4 lesson periods after lunch, in the Upper School, and the school day ends at 15.30 (Pre-Prep) and 16.15 (Upper School).

Breakfast Club (from 08.00) is available to all children. This must be booked in advance via the School Office.

Supervised Tea and Homework are available until 18.30 every day except Friday.

The school routine is similar on Wednesdays however children in Years 3 to 6 finish lessons at lunchtime as games and matches take place during the afternoon. On Wednesdays, children in the Upper School can go home at 15.30, although supervision does extend to 17.00 if required.

Tea is at 17.00 and this is followed by Homework until 18.30 if required.
