The leaves are starting to fall at Oakwood which can mean only one thing – time for the annual Conker Championships! Children from both the Pre-Prep and the Upper School have been carefully selecting the perfect fighting conkers from the chestnut trees around the school grounds and Round One began last week. Competition is as fierce as ever as everyone aims to win the coveted Conker Trophies and be crowned the Conkeror!

The children at Little Oaks Nursery have been very busy in Mr MacGregor's Garden, growing all sorts of delicious fruit and vegetables. They have been eating potato salad made with their own new potatoes and strawberry smoothies made with strawberries they'd picked that morning! [more]

The Pre-Prep pupils were out in the sunshine today enjoying all sorts of environmental activities! From collecting bugs in the woods to watching the woodpecker feeding her chicks in her nest, everyone enjoyed the chance to get a little bit closer to nature. [more]

Laura Garratt was the very proud winner of two Solar Insect Theatres, one for her and one for Oakwood, after her 'Nature Diary' won first prize in a competition run by 'Kids Love Earth', the children's science and nature shop in Chichester.Laura's sister Ella helped to write the diary, which gave a very funny account of the girls' activities looking for bugs and observing wildlife over the Easter holidays.The school Insect theatre will be... Oakwood School pupils armed with binoculars and notepads are hiding behind trees and lurking round corners to see how many birds they can spot for the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch this week. Everyone is very excited to be part of the nationwide survey to monitor UK bird numbers and we’re all hoping to spot a rare bird! Oakwood pupils have been making a fabulous willow dome in Mr MacGregors' garden this week with Ganesh Kings of Creative Willow. As well as creating a wonderful, living play area, they have been learning about how plants grow, and how to make use of natural materials in different ways. [more]

The hotly contested Pre-Prep Conker final was held this week between Emily Guiry from 2L and Emily Wilkinson from 2M. Emily Guiry scored a massive hit early on, but sadly only succeeded in cracking her own conker! Emily Wilkinson’s conker held out magnificently and she eventually won in convincing style. Oakwood School is now registered as an Eco School. Pupils from Year 1 upwards have set up a task force to help prepare the school for the bronze award.Oakwood School has a fantastic approach to the environment with many lessons taking place outside, regular Environment days and a fabulous woodland walk in the grounds. Last week, the children from Oakwood School had a wonderful Environment Day. As well as having a very educational and enjoyable talk from a local bee keeper, they were able taught how to build and light fires safely and had fun cooking chocolate bananas as well as toasting marshmallows. Oakwood School in Chichester decided to combine Red Nose day with their very own Environment Day. A year 3 group of pupils visited Swanwick Nature Reserve where they took part in pond dipping, nature trails and listened to recycling talks.
