Oakwood Friday Flyer - 7th March

International Women's Day, Saturday 8th March: We will be recognising International Women's Day at school next week. Monday assemblies will focus on the theme. Y6 are studying the vital role that women played during World War 2 in humanities and the various roles and responsibilities that were undertaken in order to keep Britain as stable as possible. This also includes visiting the Landing Craft at Southsea's D-Day Musuem that was soley built by women, during their trip on Monday.

Year 6 Trip to the D-Day Museum, Portsmouth: To support their WWII topic work, Year 6 pupils will travel to the D-Day Museum in Southsea, Portsmouth on Monday. We will leave school at 9am and travel to Southsea in the school mini-buses. We will return at approximately 4pm in time for normal pick up or attendance at clubs. Pupils should come to school in normal school uniform including blazers and their green school coat. They may be asked to change into their trainers, so please ensure they have some in school. They will need to bring a small rucksack in which to put their packed lunch which will be provided by the school catering team. Children may bring a maximum of £8 in a named, zipped wallet to spend in the souvenir shop.

2B Forest School Experience Afternoon: A reminder that children will need a set of warm clothes (tracksuit bottoms or leggings, t-shirt and hoodie) as well as their wellies, warm school coat, hats and gloves.

Primary Cup Chess Competition at Westbourne House School: Good luck to selected children who will be representing Oakwood at the latest round of the Sussex Schools' U11 Primary Cup Chess Competition next Tuesday. Mr Munt will take the children to Westbourne House on a school minibus, leaving Oakwood at 1.15pm after an early lunch, and they will return at approximately 4.30pm.

Year 5 Trip to New Park Cinema to see 'The Power of Music & Arts in Films' (am only): Year 5 pupils will be visiting the New Park Cinema on Thursday morning to watch a film exploring the ways in which music is used by filmmakers. They will depart at 9am and will be back at school for Lesson 5. Pupils should wear school uniform, including a blazer. The school will provide an appropriate snack so they will only need to bring water bottles. Thank you to FOO (Friends of Oakwood) for funding this experience.

Year 6 Parent/Subject Teacher Meetings, Lyne Hall and Gym from 4.30pm: Year 6 Parents' Evening takes place in the Lyne Hall and Gym from 4.30pm next Thursday. A reminder of your appointment times will be sent on Thursday morning. Please contact the school office if you are unable to attend or have any queries relating to the booking system. Refreshments will be served and books available to view in the gym. Please contact the school office if supervision is needed.

Chichester Festival Music Winners Assembly: Next week's assembly will celebrate all our Chichester Festival Music Winners. Parents of the winning performers are invited to attend.

Year 5 & 6 LAMDA Exams at Oakwood, 9am-5pm: Next Saturday 15th March, Years 5 and 6 Speech and Drama pupils will take their LAMDA exams in the Lyne Hall at Oakwood. Parents have been sent the exam timetable by Parentmail. 

Pupils should arrive 15 minutes before their exam time; please park in the car park near the Year 4 classrooms, where a member of staff will meet you and take your child to the waiting area to prepare for their exam. Please wait in the car and your child will be returned to you after their exam. 

Please can all children wear 'performance black' clothing and bring a filled water bottle.

Chichester Festival 70th Anniversary Gala Concert at The Minerva Theatre, Chichester - 2pm: Next Sunday 16th March, two Oakwood pupils who won their categories at the Chichester Festival, have been invited by the Festival Organisers to perform at the Chichester Festival's 70th Anniversary Gala Concert.

St Wilfrid's Hospice have asked us to share with you a fundraising event in aid of the hospice which is happening in May 2025; their first ever charity Golf Day at Cowdray Park Golf Club. 

The St Wilfrid's Hospice Golf Day starts at 8.30am with registration, followed by bacon rolls & coffee in the bar and a briefing, where maps will be provided. The 18-hole course commences at 10am across the 18-holes. This starting format is a fabulous way of ensuring that all golfers and teams can enjoy the two-course meal and prize giving together from 14.30pm. There will be the opportunity to purchase the homemade refreshments from the wonderful St. Wilfrid’s Hospice kitchen, whilst making your way around the course, and some fantastic prizes to be won with our raffle and auction.

Tiger Tags is a new School Name Tag Supplier, powered by Xmas4Schools who we have worked with before.

If your child experiences vomiting or diarrhoea, they must stay off school for a clear 48 hours from the last episode of illness. This is in line with current NHS advice for schools and workplaces. 

If your child has an epsiode of either of the above whilst at school, we will contact home and your child must be collected. 

NHS Diarrhoea and Vomiting

Head Lice and Nits are very common in young children and their families. They are not caused by dirty hair and are picked up by head-to-head contact.

If Head Lice or Nits are found at school, we will ask for children to stay off school until their head has been treated, after which they may return. This is to help prevent the spread around school which happens very quickly.

We recommend regularly checking your children's hair and treating with an appropriate pharmaceutical product. 

We also recommend that long hair is tied back for school days, to reduce the risk of head to head transfer.

NHS Head Lice and Nits Advice

Chickenpox is common and mostly affects children, but you can get it at any age. It usually gets better by itself after 1 to 2 weeks without needing to see a GP.

If your child develops chickenpox, please keep them at home until no longer contagious (once ALL the spots have crusted over). 

Symptoms are: a mild flu-like illness (nausea, raised temperature, aching or stiff muscles, headache, loss of appetite) followed, one to three weeks later, by the appearance of small, itchy red spots in clusters on the face, scalp, behind the ears and on the torso. 

After 12 to 14 hours, the spots develop into fluid filled blisters which become intensely itchy. After several days, the blisters begin to dry out and crust over.

NHS Chickenpox Advice

Threadworms (pinworms) are tiny worms visible in faeces. They're common in children and spread easily. You can treat them without seeing a GP.

The treatment for threadworms is very straightforward and involves everyone in the family taking a small, chewable tablet or liquid you swallow which can be purchased from any pharmacy. It is important that every member of the family is treated as symptoms may not be apparent. Good hygiene is vital in preventing the spread of threadworms; please encourage children to wash hands after visiting the toilet and before eating.

Threadworm treatment may not be appropriate for children under two years old or for pregnant or breastfeeding women. In these circumstances, advice should be sought from a GP.

The symptoms of threadworms include itching around the bottom, irritability, difficulty in getting to sleep and loss of appetite.

The Little Green Shop is our pre-loved uniform shop, run by Oakwood Parent Volunteers.

We are delighted to receive items of uniform for resale.  

Labelled, donated items are sold with 75% returning to the seller and 25% to FOO funds.  If any unlabelled items are left at the shop it will be assumed that these are a donation to FOO.

Reuse, Recycle and Relove!

In order to streamline the stock in the Little Green Shop, going forward the parent volunteers will be focusing on stocking just branded and Oakwood specific uniform items. 

As such, we will no longer be accepting donations of generic and non-uniform items. This includes:

White shirts, grey shorts and trousers, base layer skins (tops and bottoms), tights, ankle socks and shoes.

We are grateful for donations already received, but thank you for your future support with just donating Oakwood specific uniform. 

A reminder that we do have an Astra clothing and shoes recycling bin by the Year 4 classrooms which does generate money for the school's Green Team budget should you have any generic items to recycle.
