Sustainability 'Snippets!'

Following our Sustainability Week last term, we are keen to maintain awareness and keep a focus on as many sustainability issues as we can – hence this section of the Friday Flyer.

During our last staff INSET, we spent some considerable time thinking about how best to teach our pupils about climate change and, more importantly, how we can all help to reduce it.

We looked at the DfE Climate Action Plan, the Dasgupta Review on the Economics of Biodiversity and the 17 UN sustainable development goals, amongst other things. We have now begun to map our sustainability learning objectives across the school to ensure that we are including accurate, pertinent information in our lessons and that our pupils are able to process what they are learning in a positive way.

It is interesting to note that the language used by experts has changed from ‘climate crisis’ to ‘climate catastrophe’ and, whilst we want our children to appreciate the seriousness of our situation, we also want them to see themselves as potential arbiters of change.

Also, the photo attached is of the Year 3 Outdoor Learning group planting out sweetcorn and french beans (these are from the seeds planted on the food day of our sustainability week).

Sports Stars and News!

Good luck to the U11 Boys who are currently playing in the IAPS Cricket Festival as we post this flyer. A full report will be published next week.

IAPS U11 Girls Cricket Tournament
Well done to the U11 Girls Cricket Team who represented Oakwood at the IAPS Girls Cricket Tournament at West Hill Park on Wednesday. They played an outstanding day of cricket so early in the season to finish 3rd in the tournament overall.

The girls won four of their five matches to finish tied at the top of their group. As it was a tied result, the total number of runs was used to decide who went into the 1st/2nd playoff. Oakwood missed out by just 5 runs, and went into the 3rd/4th place playoff, which they won against Princes Mead, achieving a super 3rd place overall and coming home with medals.

Well done to our other super stars, who all performed brilliantly in their fixtures this week.

Year 6 Cricket: Oscar, Annie, Ben, Lucia and Marcos
Year 4 Cricket: Carla, Atticus, James and Freddie
Year 3 Cricket: Renzo, Chloe, Oscar, Charlie and Eddie Sm.

A reminder that all Sports Fixtures are available to view for your Prep School Child in their SOCS calendars. Spectators are welcome at fixtures, and Match teas are served in the Heritage Room for parents of players.
