Watches in school
We view the wearing of watches positively, to develop skills in learning to tell the time and to help with timekeeping throughout the school day. However, our strong preference is that children should have a modest analogue or digital watch, rather than a ‘smartwatch.’
Smartwatches are a great temptation for distraction during lessons, especially as the ever-developing technology allows for increasing numbers of apps, games and features on the watch. They are also expensive, and it can be very upsetting for children and parents if these are lost or damaged in school.
We are aware that a small number of children wear smartwatches with limited functionality, as a reasonable adjustment to their school day, arranged between parents and teachers, but we hope that the majority of our children who like to wear a watch will choose a traditional watch.
If your child wears a smartwatch, all device connectivity must be switched off, and where possible, only basic time functions enabled.
Thank you for your support helping your children to wear suitable watches in school.

Sustainability Snippets!
The Wassailing Tradition
During Year One Forest School Club, we explored the tradition of wassailing and discovered how it celebrates the promise of spring. The children examined traditional wassailing sticks before creating their own decorative versions, carefully wrapping them with colourful hemp string.
Wassailing sticks are part of an old tradition used during winter celebrations to protect orchards and celebrate the promise of spring.
By using sustainable practices we discussed how our ancestors were reliant on healthy seasons to ensure bountiful harvests.

The RSPB January Big Schools' Bird Watch
Year 3 are taking part in January’s Big Schools BirdWatch with the RSPB. Despite the very wet and damp weather, we observed evidence of birds flitting between the scrubland areas of our forest. We discussed the features and behaviours of UK wild birds and explored why it is important to care for and monitor them. The children learned about our responsibility to protect wildlife and how supporting a wide range of flora and fauna helps maintain biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem within our school grounds.
We have until 6th February to document and log the types and numbers of birds we observe and upload our results online. Alongside recording our resident birds, we have been thinking carefully about ways we can support them during the colder months. The children particularly enjoyed making highly nutritious fat seed balls, which will help provide essential energy for birds throughout winter.
Kindergarten have also been taking part, trying very hard to spot birds in the trees around the playgrounds.
