After half term we welcome motivational speaker James Shone, from I Can & I Am. Thank you to those who have already signed up to attend this talk. James will be talking to our senior pupils at Oakwood during the school day, before hosting the parent session.

Mrs Bradbury first heard James speak over 12 years ago and he is an individual who embodies positivity and determination. He firmly believes that mental health is as important as physical health and focuses on helping young people to develop a growth mindset, recognise their strengths and maintain a positive attitude.

As this parent talk takes place outside of the school day, we will be offering complimentary childcare for those who wish to attend.

Sustainability Snippets and Outdoor Learning

It has been incredibly rewarding to reflect on how strongly the school embeds sustainability within our learning objectives.

The overview below highlights how our Pre-Prep pupils are also engaging with sustainability through their outdoor learning sessions. Through enriching, hands-on activities, pupils explore ways to care for and improve our environment - both at Oakwood and within the wider community.

From developing an understanding of their place in the world in Reception to mapping UK bird life in Year 2, our children are building knowledge, awareness, and a sense of responsibility for the natural world around them.

Year GroupMichaelmas TermSpring TermSummer Term
ReceptionTo understand animal homes
are called habitats and identifying
signs of wildlife in our surroundings.
To understand that we leave no trace
in the forest and leave it as we found it.
To understand that we treat all living
things with respect and care and
we can give back to nature.
Year 1To understand that we can reduce
food waste by preserving and
cooking foods coming out of season
(green tomato chutney)
To understand that food can travel
miles to get to us and to identify why
it's better to eat locally sourced seasonal
foods.
To understand that green spaces like
forests reduce overheating by over 20%
and why we need to protect green spaces.
Year 2To understand how historical disasters
led to safer and more sustainable
buildings post 1666.
To understand how intense heat and
cold can affect climates and biodiversity,
particularly UK native bird populations.
To understand that wild areas like longer
grass and scrublands provide wildlife with
essential shelter and food in intense weather
caused by climate change.

Year 3 Outdoor Learning

Year 3 practised their knots by using rope and tarpaulin to create shelters and year 4 experimented with creating different fire lays and thinking about where might be the best place to ignite it and when might be the best time to use this particular set up.

Great work!

Nursery News

In Nursery we found and rescued a female Dor Beetle which is a native dung beetle. She will be looking for an ideal spot to dig a long tunnel underground in Spring to rest and make a cosy nest to lay her eggs.

The nursery children enjoyed observing her “washing her face” with her front mandibles and legs.

We enjoyed counting her legs and watching her shuffle to safety amongst the moss. The children affectionately named her Betty.

Watches in school

We view the wearing of watches positively, to develop skills in learning to tell the time and to help with timekeeping throughout the school day. However, our strong preference is that children should have a modest analogue or digital watch, rather than a ‘smartwatch.’

Smartwatches are a great temptation for distraction during lessons, especially as the ever-developing technology allows for increasing numbers of apps, games and features on the watch. They are also expensive, and it can be very upsetting for children and parents if these are lost or damaged in school.

We are aware that a small number of children wear smartwatches with limited functionality, as a reasonable adjustment to their school day, arranged between parents and teachers, but we hope that the majority of our children who like to wear a watch will choose a traditional watch.

If your child wears a smartwatch, all device connectivity must be switched off, and where possible, only basic time functions enabled.

Thank you for your support helping your children to wear suitable watches in school.
